1 〔水・空に〕 float 《on the water, in the air》; be afloat; ride.

●(空中に)ふわりと浮かぶ waft

・空に浮かぶ白い雲 white clouds (floating) in the sky

・春の夜空に浮かぶおぼろ月 a hazy moon in the vernal night sky

・水に浮かぶ泡 bubbles on the water

●夏になると湘南海岸にはたくさんのヨットが浮かぶ. When summer comes you can see many yachts riding the waters off the Shōnan coast.

・綿のような雲が空に浮かんでいた. Fleecy clouds hung in [drifted across, wafted across] the sky.

・松島湾には多くの小島が浮かんでいる. Dozens of small islands dot Matsushima Bay.

2 〔表面に現れる〕 rise [come (up), float] to the surface; appear; emerge; show up 《against [on]…》; loom; surface.

●魚が(えさを求めて)水面に浮かんできた. A fish rose [came up] to the surface.

・ふと彼女を見ると, うっすらと目に涙が浮かんでいた. I happened to look at her and saw a hint of tears welling up in her eyes.

・彼女の口元にはやさしい微笑が浮かんだ. A sweet smile played about her lips.

・霧の中から船の姿が大きく浮かんできた. A ship loomed large through the fog.

・山本という名の男が容疑者として捜査線上に浮かんできた. A man named Yamamoto emerged [surfaced] as a possible suspect as the investigation progressed.

3 〔意識にのぼる〕 occur to one; enter one's mind; 〔思い出される〕 come [spring] to mind.

●心[胸, 頭, 脳裏]に浮かぶ come to one [(one's) mind]; come into one's head; occur to one 《that…》

・ふと心に浮かぶ pop into one's head

・名案がふと頭に浮かんだ. A brilliant idea suddenly came to me.

・ふるさとの情景が私の心に浮かんだ. Scenes of my hometown came to [rose before my] mind.

・この音楽を聴くと, 鮮やかなイメージが頭に浮かんできた. While I was listening to this music, a clear picture came [rose] before my mind's eye.

・あの道を通ると, あの忌まわしい出来事がまざまざと脳裏に浮かんでくる. Whenever I pass that way, that terrible event springs vividly to mind [I get a vivid flashback of that terrible event].

・再び心[脳裏]に浮かぶ come back to mind; come to mind again.

●一人になると, ふと母の顔がまぶたに浮かぶ. Whenever I'm alone, my mother's face pops into mind [appears before my eyes].

・この写真を見ると, 父の元気なころの姿が目に浮かぶ. Whenever I look at this photo(graph), I am reminded of Father when he was healthy [well].

・ここにいると, 自然と構想が浮かんでくる. When I am here, ideas occur spontaneously.
